Happy weekend lovies!
With Canada being home to the Rogers Cup, Nitin and I try to catch at least one game a year, as we’re huge sports fanatics. We watched the men play at the Aviva Centre last year, and this year we were lucky to catch the highly anticipated semifinal match between 33 year old superstar Serena Williams, and 18 year old Swiss player Belinda Bencic. For those not familiar with the Rogers Cup, it’s an annual tennis tournament held in Canada, hosted in both Toronto and Montreal (the women’s tournament is held in Toronto during odd-numbered years, while the men play in Montreal during this time, and vice versa). Organized by Tennis Canada, the Rogers Cup hosts some of the best players from around the globe.
One of my favourite things about attending the Rogers Cup, aside from the tennis of course, is putting together my ensemble. This year I kept things simple and nerdy, rocking a wrap dress from the new H&M fall collection (not up online just yet, but available in stores for $39.99 CND), my old school Michael Kors canvas hemp tote, and my Burberry ballerina flats (similar here). I accessorized with my Michael Kors watch, bracelet from Athens Protasis in Greece, and Kate Spade necklace and earrings.
Nitin and I caught the game with his cousins, and we all headed down to the Aviva Centre a couple hours before the match to enjoy the pre-game festivities. We were fortunate to get VIP tickets for the match, which gave us access to some great lounges where we enjoyed the wining and dining experience, and bidding on some great silent auction pieces (Nitin was eyeing a neon Batman & Robin picture …thankfully, he didn’t win it).
After relaxing in the different lounges, we headed over to our seats to catch the match. We sat front row, and had a perfect view of the court and the players. With Serena being the number one seed favoured to win this match, unseeded 18 year old Belina didn’t back down from the challenge, to say the least. Despite a bandaged middle finger on her left hand, right-handed Serena managed to dominate the first set 6 – 3, but quickly lost momentum during the last two sets. A combination of inconsistent play and serving errors by Serena had Belinda capitalizing on every opportunity, and taking home the second set, 7 – 5. Serena looked quite discouraged after this set, and ended up breaking her racket. I love the tennis rage …so much passion. Serena made a great comeback to Belinda’s 5 – 1 lead in the third set, but Belinda’s skilled backhand and powerful forehand ended up carrying her to victory. Belinda took home the semi-final win, with Serena falling 6-3, 5-7, 4-6. Belinda went on to win the tournament today, beating out Simona Halep in the finals.
Enjoy the match in pics :)!
