There are two things the Khosla household will never be without; love and fresh flowers. I’m a hopeless romantic whose face lights up at the mere sight and smell of flowers. With Valentine’s Day around the corner I decided to pay a visit to my favourite florist and I’m excited to share with you all the details on where to get the best flowers in town, how to keep your arrangements fresh and healthy and the best types of blooms for the winter months.
Gatto Flowers has been around for over 30 years, specializing in everything from one-off bouquets to weddings to corporate events and sympathy arrangements. This small family owned business is run by husband and wife Ignazio and Antonietta Gatto and their two beautiful daughters, Luisa and Linda. Starting off as a two-man operation selling to independent stores, Gatto Flowers now proudly employs over 20 people and is one of the top flower company’s in Ontario.
For as long as I can remember Gatto Flowers has been my go-to place for the freshest, widest selection of flowers and arrangements. From family events to community galas I’ve worked on to my own wedding, they never fail to amaze me with their elaborate, carefully created arrangements at competitive prices.
Looking for a little guidance this Valentine’s Day? You’re in luck! I caught up with Antonietta Gatto for a quick Q&A on Valentine’s Day arrangements:
Q: How far in advance do you recommend calling if someone is looking to get an arrangement made?
We can make bouquets on the spot, but we do book appointments for consultations.
Q: Are roses still the most popular Valentine’s Day flower, and if so, what is a close second?
Red roses are always the most popular around Valentine’s Day but more and more people are straying away from red and opting for colourful roses. Orchids are also quite popular this time of year.
Q: What flowers do you recommend when clients want something that is going to last a while?
Mixed bunches are becoming quite popular because of the fact they last a while. With roses, they look great one day but can wilt by the next.
Q: What are the best flowers for winter months?
It’s best to stick with roses, carnations and mums. They have a stronger shelf life and they won’t freeze as fast. Hydrangeas are very delicate and they freeze quite fast, so I don’t recommend those for winter.
There’s nothing worse than putting together or purchasing a beautiful arrangement, only to have it start wilting on you within a day or two. Caring for flowers can be tricky, but here are some tips on maximizing the lifespan of your budding florals:
How to Make Your Arrangements Last Longer
- Change the water every 2 -3 days – Bacteria can build up on stems sitting in water which not only affects the longevity of your arrangement but causes an unpleasant odour. Also, ever noticed how some flowers drink up all the water within the first couple days? Keep your flowers from drying out and wilting by ensuring your vases are nice and full
- Cut the stems – Before you place your flowers in a vase, cut the ends on an angle. By cutting on an angle you are maximizing the area of exposure. Antonietta recommends re-cutting the stems every few days to keep them fresh
- Use sharp scissors – To avoid damaging the stem and reducing their ability to drink up water, use a sharp knife or scissors when cutting
- Remove leaves – Carefully remove all leaves below the water line to prevent them from rotting and causing cloudy water. I say be careful because if you damage the stems bactercia can enter them when in water. I recommend keeping some of the leaves above the water line as they are part of the hydration process
- Flower food – While some people swear by sugar or sprite to keep their arrangements fresh, Antonietta believes in good ol’ fashion flower food. I’m all for innovation and making the most of your household ingredients, but it’s important to remember that flower food has been scientifically developed to increase longevity, allowing your flowers to maximize their growth. For best results, follow the instructions on the package
