Are you on the hunt for some last minute gift ideas for boys under 6? If so, I’ve got you covered! If there’s one thing I hate, it’s buying something for the boys only to have it played with for 20 minutes then tossed in a corner, or broken and in the garbage within days. For Christmas this year, we did a few fun toys for Evan, and the rest is a mix of Lego, puzzles and games, because, well, that’s his era right now. You can also check out my top gift ideas for 1-2 year olds down below.
Toys”R”Us is my one-stop-shop for the boys, and I’m happy to share my top recommendations for 5 year old boys this year, as well as a list of gifts from last year that have stood the test of time.
Top Gifts for 5-6 Year Old Boys
- Hot Wheels Mario Kart Race Track – This was on Evan’s wish list last year. Given the size and the fact that he has so many Hot Wheels race tracks, we decided against it. This year, Evan has asked Santa for this track. I’ve seen it in action and I must say, I can see the appeal. I think the boys will both be enjoying this one for a while.
- Lego – Lego is a classic gift. Evan’s closet shelves are filled with lego, and it’s been his most requested gift for every holiday over the last year and a half. This year he added the Lego Car Transporter to his wishlist after he saw it in the Toys”R”Us Top Toys Guide, along with this Spiderman figure, Hulk set, 3-in-1 creator set and this race car.
- Books – Another timeless gift, books! My house has more books than I know what to do with, but truthfully, I love it. The Dog Man series is a big hit with this age group. Evan has a couple different Dog Man books but not the first few, so we got him this set. I also recommend this series, or search and find books like this one.
- Puzzles – Some of my favourite memories as a little girl are doing puzzles with my mom. When Oliver is napping, doing puzzles with Evan is one of my favourite activities. I love this one, this one and this one. If you’re on the hunt for more challenging puzzles you can do as a family, I love this one and this one.
- Games – The last couple years Evan has been getting more and more into games, and I love it because I’ve always been fond of them. Our current favourites include Uno, Scrabble Junior, Jenga and Trouble. We’re adding Connect 4 and Guess Who? to the mix this year.
- Hot Wheels RC Vehicle – When Evan was told to narrow down this Christmas list, this bad boy made the cut. The boys love remote control vehicles, and they’re obsessed with the fact that this one lights up and has a smasher mode so it can smash things along the way.
From all the gifts we got the boys last year, there are a handful that are still their regular go-to’s. These are tried, tested and true gifts that stand the test of time:
- Hot Wheels City Ultimate Hauler – This was the top gift on Evan’s wish list last year, and I’m happy to report that both boys use this regularly. I rotate their toys every couple weeks, but this one always ends up staying out for longer than intended because they have so much fun with it.
- Play Doh Kitchen Set – Both boys love this set, especially Oliver. It’s a great Play Doh staple to have.
- Books – All our books from last year are still read on a regular basis, which is why I always recommend books for kids.
I find shopping for Oliver harder than Evan because we either have all the classics or did at one point. With that being said, I tend to have a good idea what will last and what will be left behind in the basement corner. Here are my go-to gifts for 1-2 year old boys:
- Books – Classic books that have been a hit with both boys are anything Eric Carle like this book, this one or this one. Toys”R”Us has a great selection of kids books!
- VTech Motorized Track Set – My boys love their cars, and I know this will keep Oliver (and Evan) entertained. It’s a classic kids track that reminds me of one I used to have as a kid.
- Bluey Fire Truck – Fire trucks are one of those toys that never get old. I also love this Early Learning Centre Fire Truck.
- Nets – Two of the most used gifts in our home are this Little Tikes Basketball Net which is adjustable so it can grow with kids, and a hockey net similar to this one. I also love this, which is perfect for sports-loving kid.
- Duplo – Oliver loves Lego Duplo, just as did Evan at that age, and his favourite sets are this one and this one.
Happy holidays lovies!
